The Story

Golf, and a whole lot more! Since 2004 when Colleen and John Lindstrom took over the daily operations of Cobb Meadows (formerly Hoberg’s Forest Lake) Golf Club they have enjoyed the opportunity to be stewards of the amazing traditions of this Cobb Mountain vacationland.

Why Rob Roy? To bring along a little tradition of their own, Colleen’s grandfather, Pat McDonald owned and operated the original Rob Roy Golf Club outside of Chicago for over forty years. Pat and his wife, along with their five children, began a labor of love and determination, reopening as World War II was winding down and bringing to success a golf course that had been abandoned.

John began work at the Rob Roy driving range when he was just nine years old, and it was there that he first met Colleen.

The pair first saw Cobb Meadows in November 2003 on a drive over Cobb Mountain with John’s mother, Betty, and Colleen’s father, Mike. Mike exclaimed, “it is a diamond in the rough” the rest as they say is “history”.

Since their acquisition, Rob Roy has hosted many events which they hope will become new traditions…. Including Kentucky Derby Day at Rob Roy, Celebration of Summer Wine & Food Pairing; the Lake County Amazing Race and the Boo-Bash Halloween Festival.

The restaurant at Rob Roy offers “Lake County’s Best Sunday Champaign Brunch.” And on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights you’ll delight in something from the regular dinner menu of in one of award winning Chef Israel’s sumptuous additions.

Golf offerings include an active Men’s and Women’s Club and the return of the very popular summertime Friday Night Twilight.

Often, visitors take the time to share their memories of Cobb Mountain – the old resorts, the golf course, the restaurant and the bar. John and Colleen have enjoyed being a part of the many memorable experiences on Cobb so far and look forward to sharing in the making of new memories in the years to come, welcome to Rob Roy!

History

The golf course at Cobb had its beginnings in the early 1950’s as an added attraction for the many bustling family resorts then in operation in the area. At about the same time, George Hoberg, Don Emerson and others subdivided several large tracts of land and began offering lots for sale. Over time, the local resort industry lost much of its attraction as families turned to more mobile forms of distraction such as travel trailer and the camper. Many of the old resorts closed for lack of business.

Then, the development of steam wells and the production of geothermal energy brought an influx of permanent residents. That trend continues.

And now, the siren call of “quality time with kids” has young couples once again looking for a place to settle in for a few days to relax. In response, once abandoned resorts are attracting new owners with money and vision and they have opened their doors to a new generation of folks looking for a place to slow down – if only for a moment.

Through it all, the golf course has remained; the traditions are remembered, and John and Colleen (who married in October 2006) are determined to make today’s dreams into still more memories for tomorrow and the future.
